Welcome to the Easy Hooker Brewing Company in Sitka, Alaska. Although the brewery is not yet operational, we are making significant progress each day and hope to be up and running by the end of 2008.
This web site is our way of keeping you informed of our progress. It also provides you with a means to communicate with us and let us know what you want from a Sitka brewery. We know that for a brewery to succeed, it must have the support of the community. Why build a brewery in Sitka you might ask? Despite the fact that we are on an island in Southeast Alaska, Sitka is the fourth largest city in the state. The nearly 9,000 people here deserve to have the option to buy a good craft brew if they desire. Yet, of the nine largest cities in Alaska (as of 2005), Sitka is the only one that lacks a brewery or brewpub within the city limits or within a reasonable commute (we don't consider a four-hour ferry ride to Juneau a reasonable commute). This is not the first time that someone has sought to brew beer in Sitka. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Robert Witz Brewery and Saloon was very popular. Like many others have done before us, we began to discuss bringing a brewery back to Sitka years ago, but never really pursued the idea beyond casual discussions. So what changed, and why name it Easy Hooker Brewing you ask? Simple. In January 2007 we purchased a 23-foot aluminum skiff called the Easy Hooker. At first, we weren't really too fond of the name, but eventually it started to grow on us. Then we started thinking of catchy slogans that we could use with our boat. Before long, our idea for a brewery in Sitka merged with the boat name and the possibilities for witty phrases was endless. Intrigued with this new marketing approach we began to seriously research the requirements for opening a brewery. We don't want to be a t-shirt and cap company that sells apparel to unknowing tourists that flood the streets every summer. This is a tool to help us reach our goal of opening the brewery. We like to have a good time and you might think that some of our shirts, contests or web pages are funny. Rest assured, though, that we are very serious about our beer. |
